What is PaperQuilling?

Paper Quilling is the art of rolling, shaping, and arranging strips of paper to create beautiful detailed artwork.   Early samples of this art date back 500 years when it was used by monks and nuns to elaborately decorate religious artifacts.   Hand torn strips of paper were rolled on feather quills; thus the name "Quilling".    This artform enjoyed popularity for over 350 years when it's use extended from religious orders to the nobility and upper/middle classes.   Famous quillers included Elizabeth I, the Bronte sisters, and Jane Austin who mentioned quilling in her novel "Sense and Sensibility ".   But in the late 1800's it's popularity declined and this beautiful artform was almost lost forever.   Today it is enjoying a revival as Quilling Artists and Quilling Organizations dedicate themselves to promoting the art to ensure it survives for the enjoyment of future generations.
